Our John Muir Memorial Hash trail starts about 1 mile away from John Muir’s historic mansion, and will pass through Mt. Wanda, named after John Muir’s oldest daughter, and will go through adjacent open space areas. You will also see John Muir’s Gravesite, which is in a secluded location that most people don’t know about and is not publicized because it is surrounded by private homes. Please be respectful of the neighbors when we are at John Muir’s gravesite. If anyone asks who we are, tell them “We are with the Sierra Club.”

John Muir, born in 1835 in Dunbar, Scotland, emigrated to the United States when he was 11 and is widely known as the “Father of the National Park Service” and the Founder of the Sierra Club. Without John Muir, we wouldn’t have Yosemite or Grand Canyon National Parks. What you might not know is that he lived for 36 years in Martinez, California where he took over his father-in-law’s fruit farming business and became a wealthy man before he became well known as a conservationist. After his father-in-law died, John Muir and his family moved into his father-in-law’s Italianate mansion which is now a National Parks Historic Site at the intersection of Highway 4 and Alhambra Valley Road in Martinez, CA. John Muir’s home and adjacent property are part of the National Park Service’s John Muir Historic Site, which I encourage you all to visit BEFORE you go to our hash run.
They are open from 10-5 pm daily and admission is FREE. http://www.nps.gov/jomu/index.htm
